How to Resolve Birth Trauma
If you’ve experienced a challenging birth and are feeling numb and disconnected or panicky and hyper vigilant, processing your birth story can help tremendously.
The way that I approach birth trauma involves taking a thorough intake of your conception period, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
If you’re worried about getting overwhelmed by your birth story, I always attempt to layer it with a strengths-based approach that allows you to see the ways you triumphed in an impossibly difficult experience.
In addition to the trauma we also look for the helpers, the way you intuitively knew what you needed or what could happen, and the way you persevered despite the experience being so overwhelming.
After I have a good understanding of your story, we will layer your experience with both the strengths and the challenges to help prevent you from being overwhelmed and then I will help you identify thwarted defense responses that occurred at the time of the trauma.
For example, if you frozen and couldn’t find your voice, we’ll help you find it. If you froze, but you wanted to fight, we’ll help you find your fight response. Or if you froze and wanted to flee, we’ll help you find that response in your body too.
Through the process of swinging back and forth between the challenging and the strengths in your story, we’ll help you move into a place of integration where the trauma no longer feels stuck and activating, but more settled and resolved.
Often processing your birth trauma as soon as you can after birth can help you have a more fulfilling parenthood experience, though it’s never too late to work through your birth trauma.
You don’t have to feel stuck and alone. You can find healing and wholeness through processing your birth trauma and story.
